One hundred and forty IT staff have transferred from insurance company Equitas to outsourcing company ITNet.

The transfer is part of a £35m, four-year outsourcing contract announced last week that amounts to the biggest ever financial services deal for an outsourcer better known for its work in local government.

The Equitas staff moving over have skills in IBM, Unix and the Internet. Equitas is retaining a contract management team of four, made up of a company accountant and three former IT staff.

Jane Barker, finance director at Equitas, said, "We were very careful about who we chose for the contract management positions to make sure they had the right blend of commercial and IT experience. We advertised the posts internally and externally."

ITNet is to receive £13m in the first year for applications management and development and for running IT operations including desktop, server and mid-range systems support. The full service goes live on 1 October.

Equitas began work on the outsourcing deal a year ago. It was advised by the Partners for Change consultancy.
