The mobile business revolution is growing three times faster than the Internet. And Europe is leading the US, thanks to companies such as Abbey National, Bank of Scotland and Swissair.

Speaking at the CSSA conference, IBM's European director of pervasive computing, David McKenzie, said that 90% of the 50 leading European Internet companies are moving to accommodate the Wireless Application Protocol (Wap).

The growth in pervasive computing - the term IBM uses to describe mobile e-business - is accelerating due to technological developments and increased bandwidth, he said.

Developments in silicon germanium batteries could increase the time that mobile devices can operate for from hours to days, said McKenzie.

Mobile e-commerce will also benefit from miniaturisation of storage devices - a 1Gbyte disc drive one inch square should be announced by October, he said.
