Rackspace launches hosted platform for virtual desktops in Europe

Rackspace has rolled out its hosted virtual desktop platform across Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA).

Using NetApp storage, the company said its Hosted Virtual Desktop (HVD) platform allows customers to run virtual desktops via the public cloud or private cloud infrastructure across PCs, smartphones and tablet devices.

David Kelly, UK managing director at Rackspace, said: "Hosting virtual desktops with Rackspace allows companies to reduce deployment times of upgrades and new desktop infrastructure while reducing capital expenditure. Simultaneously, this will allow companies to free up IT resources for more critical internal business operations."

Customers will be able to host virtual desktop software supplied by Citrix, Infosys, Point to Point, Centralis and Intrinsic Technologies. Rackspace's RackConnect allows customers to use the company's private cloud for virtual desktop deployments.

"We're tapping our community of partners and their networks to provide our European customers with a hosted virtual desktop platform that offers them choices," said Kelly.

He added that its Fanatical Support service will provide customers technical support needed for either a dedicated environment for virtual desktop infrastructure or for shared hosted desktops.

Rackspace’s HVD service will be based in a UK datacentre.
