Three quarters of IT job recruiters believe that candidates with additional qualifications have a better chance of being employed, according to a survey by recruitment website The IT Job Board.

Some 84% of IT professionals said holding industry certifications would improve their employment opportunities., and 87% of IT job candidates said they thought that recruiters and hiring managers would be on the lookout for additional qualifications when recruiting for jobs in IT.

It is clear that both recruiters and candidates value certifications, and they can have a huge impact on people's IT job opportunities, said Alex Farrell, managing director of The IT Job Board. During difficult times, when employment is harder to come by and the competition is fierce, holding additional IT certifications could be vital.

In terms of certifications most valued by IT professionals, 43% cited Microsoft (MCSE, MCSA and MCT) on the hardware side, followed by 29% for Cisco CCNA and CCNP. On the software side, 25% of IT professionals said that the Prince2 certification was most important, followed by the ITIL Certification.
