A lack of rigour in managing telecoms is costing UK firms £240m a year, according to voice and data consultancy Azzurri Communications.
Azzurri's audit of 1,200 UK corporates found they wasted one-fifth of their telecoms spend through a combination of employee misuse and inappropriate tariffs, as well as through unused lines and equipment.

While companies bought services based on the best price per minute (PPM), they ignored other considerations such as personnel, line rental, equipment rental and maintenance costs.
"As long as people think they are getting really cheap PPM rates, they think they are saving money. What they don't look at is whether their employees are making unnecessary calls, or wasting money on rental for lines that they don't use," said Jason Standerwick, Azzurri Communications' managing director, Central Region.
One clear way to cut costs is to nominate one person - typically your IT manager - to take combined responsibility for fixed line phones, mobiles and the internet.
