Cisco chairman John Chambers was set to celebrate his company's 20th birthday this week by unveiling a new router and a strategy to power the next generation of internet and telecoms networks.

The company said its new high-end product, the Cisco Carrier Routing System, would provide networking technology capable of scaling to 92 terabits per second.

Cisco said this level of bandwidth should be sufficient to cope with demands from emerging network applications for the next 10 years. The fully configured Cisco Carrier Routing System could replace 1,000 high-end routers, it said.
