McAfee.com distributes SecurityCenter with P2P apps

McAfee.com is looking to take advantage of the popularity of peer-to-peer file-trading applications to spread its SecurityCenter tool, which is being distributed with a pair of P2P programs, the company said yesterday.

The McAfee.com SecurityCenter is a security information service that gives users a real-time view into the status of Internet threats.

SecurityCenter offers alerts, vulnerability checks and other security information such as McAfee.com's World Virus Map. The software is already offered as a tab in the MSN Messenger that comes bundled with Windows XP.

Along with offering free security information, SecurityCenter also provides easy ways for users to sign up for McAfee.com's managed antivirus, firewall and other security services.

SecurityCenter will be included as an optional component with peer-to-peer applications when they are downloaded from Web sites, according to a statement released by McAfee. The software will be presented as a panel in the applications, much as it is in MSN Messenger.

The first two peer-to-peer programs to feature SecurityCenter will be StreamCast Networks' Morpheus and Optisoft's Blubster. McAfee.com will be pursuing similar partnerships with other peer-to-peer companies, the company said.
