Microsoft has launched a version of its MSN Internet portal for mobile devices, and will offer access to its Hotmail Web-based e-mail service over mobile phones.

Users in Germany and France can now access the MSN home page, news and sport channels, plus instant messaging and e-mail services Messenger and Hotmail from their mobile devices.

The service went live on 6 February in Germany and France. Microsoft plans to launch in the UK and Spain in the near future.

Users will specify e-mail addresses from which they agree to receive SMS e-mail. They will then be able to read and reply to any messages from those addresses, said a spokesman for Microsoft. This will protect against spam and unwanted SMS messaging, he said.
