Cisco targets the Man

Cisco targets the Man

Cisco has unveiled hardware to cater for metropolitan area networks (Mans)

The first router specifically for Mans, the 10720, enables video, Net telephony and virtual private network tunnelling - secure channels over the public Internet.

Analysts believe Cisco is repositioning to take advantage of the growth in the deployment of Mans - which fit in somewhere between the Lan and the Wan - by businesses and service providers, following the trend of pushing IP over longer distances and moving away from carrier methods such as Sonet.

Cisco is also repositioning its high-end 12000 series towards the network edge by launching a series of line cards to enable high-speed services to Cisco devices, and the 12404 Internet router which it claims is the smallest 10gbps router available.
