UK online sales increased 15% in August compared to the same month last year, according to the latest IMRG Capgemini e-retail sales index.

British shoppers spent £4.4bn online during August - an increase of 15% and equivalent to £72 per person in the UK.

Sales of electrical goods experienced year-on-year growth of 28% and a 10% increase in online sales from July, with British consumers spending more on electrical goods online than in any other month in 2010, said the report.

Retailer John Lewis's online sales increased 36% in August. Jonathon Brown, head of online selling at John Lewis, said its fashion directorate saw sales up 100% on last year.

"Our electricals business also saw a good year-on-year performance boosted by newness including the iPad, new Garmin Satnav and a host of small electricals," said Brown.

"We are positive with our trading outlook for the rest of the year as we continue to focus on growing our online assortment and improving the quality of our customer experience."

Tina Spooner, director of information at IMRG, said, "With 31 million UK consumers now shopping online, the internet continues to be a lucrative channel for retailers that can adapt to shoppers' changing behaviour during these uncertain times."

Clothing brand Boden also reported a 16% increase in pre-tax profits from online sales.
