A systems crash at Barclays meant thousands of UK customers were unable to access their bank accounts or withdraw money from cash machines on Saturday.

The bank restored its services on Sunday after frustrated shoppers were unable to make purchases from around 12.30pm on 21 August.

Barclays was unable to elaborate on the cause of the problems.

Following a complaint from a Computer Weekly reader in May, The Information Commissioner's Office was in recent talks with the bank regarding the security set-up of its mobile banking service.
