Strassman's piece, Transforming IT costs into profits, warns against looking for magic solutions when it comes to implementing IT in the struggle for competitive advantage. Too often IT spending takes the form of an "arms race" with companies driven by fears of what their rivals are up to, rather than generating new profitable activities through the use of technology.

Hale's piece, The information path from values to decisions, uses Butler Group's "diamond" model of the enterprise as a system to show the relationship between values and actions. From this he lays out the steps that must be taken by the enterprise to ensure that its information infrastructure can support an appropriate level of decision support.
