The global standards group GS1, the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) and the European Committee for Standardisation (CEN) are banding together in a two-year project to improve collaboration and maximise the global interoperability of RFID standards.
The three organisations have created an EU-funded project called GRIFS, the Global RFID Interoperability Forum for Standards, which will work to characterise the variety of standards activities taking place globally.
These include aligning RFID standards development globally; creating a number of liaison activities to disseminate information about the importance of global standards; and ensuring continuous close collaboration between standards activities.
The three organisations say this will create synergies, increase co-operation and ultimately avoid unnecessary business expenses caused by the development of incompatible localised standards.
I guess the proof of the pudding will be in the eating. Ultimately, anything that can help avoid unnecessary business expenses must be welcome.
