Standards are never very far away from the heart of RFID's development. Talk to anyone about RFID and you're likely to get two opposing views: one will say that EPCglobal's involvement has been a necessity to create the right standards infrastructure from which RFID can grow to solve real business issues, and the other will say that it's all become far too complex.
The answer is probably some way between the two: standards are a necessity, but they take a long time to develop, and not everyone adopting RFID as a business driver is prepared to wait for standards to make their seemingly glacial progress.
As an example of the ongoing discussion over standards, Simon Holloway, once a Microsoft RFID specialist but now at Bloor Research, discusses the standards landscape for RFID and sensors.
