When we take that first action, is this: Does what I am thinking, does what I am doing, does how I am being, take me closer to where I want to go, or does it take me further away? If it takes you closer, do more of the same, if it takes you further away, then do something else, and if that doesn't work, then do something else, and if that doesn't work...

...Talk about the other person, not about you. Everyone has a favourite subject, themselves. So listen to people, really listen, what does this person want right now? And ask questions, rather than make statements. And most powerfully of all in the like stakes, find a way to make the other person "right." Then, when it has worked in your organisation, do it with a teenager, any teenager will do...it will be a nice change to what parents normally say
Don't do this as a technique, do it because it is the biggest compliment you can ever pay someone...
