A Call to Arms

OK, enough talk, debate and conferences - let us join together on a mission to forever change the perception and performance of IT, in organisations, and for our customers.IT is time to make the future very different from the past, and only you, we, us, can make this happen - together.

No theory, no jargon, just real actions that take us forward...

Two fundamentals:

1. We will never solve our deep-rooted problems with the same mindset that created them - so, forget thinking outside the box, it is time to leave the box behind

2. This is not time for theory, debate or discussion, it is time for action.

Please send me your best examples of success - of your own actions that work, way way beyond mere "best practice" - Together, we will form a network that helps each other - and that changes the future shape of IT - simply by sharing real experience that works, we will together build up a database of the best of the best, available to all. Please post as a comment or e-mail me davidprivate@nkdleader.com - if you e-mail me, anonymity is a given. Thank you.

Vision...

Choices that take the business of IT into the next business age

With thanks to Stephanie Fuller from Cardiff:

Your IT Vision is also your company / business / organisational vision, and vice-versa. You are not there to "drive" or "follow" or "serve" "the business" - you are "the business"

So, double check your vision and make sure it is the same as that of your organisation

And, tomorrow, what to do at the next level down - how to achieve the vision...

Please send me your best examples of success - of your own actions that work, way way beyond mere "best practice" - Together, we will form a network that helps each other - and that changes the future shape of IT - simply by sharing real experience that works, we will together build up a database of the best of the best, available to all. Strategy...

Choices that take the business of IT into the next business age

With thanks to Mike Ansom from Melbourne:

Cross reference what you do in IT with the overall, organisational strategy, and vice-versa. So, each line of your IT business strategy will have, underneath, the specific company result that it helps to achieve, and under each part of the company strategy will be the way that IT will help make it happen. This embeds you as one, and will be done by all other areas or functions

Tomorrow, what if there is no company strategy, what then?

Please send me your best examples of success - of your own actions that work, way way beyond mere "best practice" - Together, we will form a network that helps each other - and that changes the future shape of IT - simply by sharing real experience that works, we will together build up a database of the best of the best, available to all. Strategy (2)

Choices that take the business of IT into the next business age

With thanks to Peter from Auckland:

If your company does not have a strategy then if you are feeling brave, do an IT business strategy, anyway, and if you are feeling very brave, put forward your idea of a company strategy. Do one of these, i.e. put up, or...

Please send me your best examples of success - of your own actions that work, way way beyond mere "best practice" - Together, we will form a network that helps each other - and that changes the future shape of IT - simply by sharing real experience that works, we will together build up a database of the best of the best, available to all. Clarity

Choices that take the business of IT into the next business age

With thanks to Max from Cardiff:

Never underestimate the ability of human beings to make the simple, very very complex

Absolutely Max, especially individuals - together - in projects, teams and organisations. The best starting point to unravel that complexity?

Ensure that everyone knows how what they do every day relates to achieving the overall vision - and if what they are doing does not relate to the overall vision, then don't do it

Please send me your best examples of success - of your own actions that work, way way beyond mere "best practice" - Together, we will form a network that helps each other - and that changes the future shape of IT - simply by sharing real experience that works, we will together build up a database of the best of the best, available to all. Clarity (2)

Choices that take the business of IT into the next business age

From Clive in Guildford

This Clarity thing is critical - it runs across everything - yes, if what you are doing does not help the vision don't do it - also, be absolutely clear of everyone's top THREE (no more) responsibilities, and be equally clear on people's decision making freedom and authority, especially where customers are concerned.

Please send me your best examples of success - of your own actions that work, way way beyond mere "best practice" - Together, we will form a network that helps each other - and that changes the future shape of IT - simply by sharing real experience that works, we will together build up a database of the best of the best, available to all. Choices that take the business of IT into the next business age

Make sure you always give your boss at least two, ideally three choices - if makes them feel any decision is theirs

Please send me your best examples of success - of your own actions that work, way way beyond mere "best practice" - Together, we will form a network that helps each other - and that changes the future shape of IT - simply by sharing real experience that works, we will together build up a database of the best of the best, available to all. The future- not what it was

I was sitting at the CW Awards evening last week, and I had a sudden realisation - yes, we have made major steps forward in technology, yes we are a young "industry," however we still do not get the recognition, profile and positive perception we desire. And that is down to us, to you, to me, to everyone. Whether you agree with this is pretty much irrelevant, what counts s what your customers, peers, or (sic) USERS (think drugs) think. So, go ask them today - not by e-mail, not by phone, in person...and let me know what they say.

Agree? Great - do something about it
Disagree? Great - have a rant and do something about it, anyway
