Growth of 40% in online orders helped retailerSainsbury'sboost sales 4.7% to a
shade under £10bn for 2007/8. This puts it on track to meet a sales
target of £2.5bn growth by March 2008.
Online sales are now running at 80,000 a week, and the number
of online stores has risen to 200, the company said this
morning.
Sainsbury, which several years ago suffered massive disruption
to its
supply chain, appears to have got to grips with the problem.
CEO Justin King said good progress on IT, supply chain management
and store operation were helping the retailer to save over £440m
over three years, with £155m coming this financial year.
The company is developing dedicated IT and supply chain
infrastructures, including offices in Hong Kong and Poland to
enable more efficient and effective direct sourcing of products, it
said.
The retailer now has 491 stores and 303 convenience stores that
serve 16.5 million customers a week.
