Monster hack sees 146,000 government job applicants' records taken

About 146,000 people using a US government jobs website managed by Monster.com have had their personal information stolen by hackers, reports Reuters.
The data theft from the USAjobs.gov site - which has around 2,000,000 users - was part of the hacking operation on the Monster.com site that was eventually uncovered and disclosed by Monster last week (19 August).
The US government disabled the jobs database after discovering the theft, reports Reuters.
Information stolen from the USAjobs.gov database included names, addresses, phone numbers and e-mail addresses. Social Security numbers, which are encrypted, were not compromised, said Reuters.
Monster says millions of personal files may have been compromised worldwide, with the hacking operation said to have been run out of eastern Europe.
