Companies will be able to check recruits’ career and
educational credentials on the National Skills Registry (NSR). The
database will also help police to tackle data theft.
IT skills association Nasscom and the National Securities
Depositry have set up the database in response to growing security
concerns in India.
Speaking at the launch of the NSR, Nasscom president Kiran
Karnik said: "Independent verification of data and biometric
identification will not only increase security for companies and
customers, but will protect employees from criminal elements
seeking to misuse their ID. This will be one more step towards
sustaining India's competitive advantage in the global market."
A Nasscom/McKinsey report in December predicted India's IT
business services and IT exports would grow by more than 25% a
year, reaching £35bn by 2010. The Indian IT sector already employs
about one million people directly and a further two million in
support services such as transport.
