Metropolitan Police weighs up outsourcing options

The Met Police Service is engaging with the outsourcing industry for back-office services as it targets annual savings of £500m

The Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) is engaging with the outsourcing industry as it targets annual government-prompted savings of £500m from its £3.6bn budget.

According to a report by the Financial Times, the London police force is in talks with suppliers about the outsourcing of back-office services.

The savings will help the Met Police meet the budget cuts being made by the government without affecting front-line services.

Police forces across the country are outsourcing to cut IT and back office costs.

In June 2010, Cleveland Police became the first police body to use Steria to share services such as finance, human resources, payroll, commissioning and fleet management in Steria's dedicated datacentres, in a 10-year, £175m agreement. 

Northamptonshire and Cheshire police forces are linking their back-office systems, despite being miles apart, after identifying one another as being at similar points in their IT development.

The MPS has an IT outsourcing contract with Capgemini, which runs until 2015. The IT services company manages and supports desktop IT networks, telephony and mobile devices for the Metropolitan Police, which includes about 30,000 desktops and laptops, 38,000 telephone extensions and 8,500 mobile phones.

The Met is looking at every aspect of its operation to cut costs, including its property portfolio. In February 2013, the London Assembly began reviewing the Metropolitan Police’s technology strategy to assess whether it will be capable of meeting tough cost-cutting targets while retaining service levels. The MPS’s technology strategy sets out to make technology savings of £42m in 2014-15 and £60m in the following year.
