IBM has unveiled details of the next version of its flagship integrated operating system, i5/OS, which is due to ship in 2008.

IBM has unveiled details of the next version of its flagship integrated operating system, i5/OS, which is due to ship in 2008.

The i5/OS Version 6 oerating system will offer web services and virtualisation capabilities to help businesses get the most out of their IT operations, IBM said.

IBM said i5/OS will ship with tools designed to make it easier to deploy and integrate web services as well as an integrated web application server to simplify the deployment of Java applications. The operating system also includes an encryption feature to help companies protect data by encrypting data that is held on disk devices and backed up to tape.

The new operating system can also take advantage of IBM's system management tools. IBM said 5/OS Version 6 will be able to use IBM's Systems Director management tool help IT departments support a mixed environment that includes other operating systems like UNIX and Windows. Using System Director also allows 5/OS Version 6 to support IBM System Storage, IBM said.
