Nuffield Hospitals has signed a £2m seven-year contract with specialist network integrator Scalable Networks to implement a high-performance Extreme Networks Lan infrastructure connecting 40 sites.

The future-proof network will support voice- and video-over IP technologies, as well as applications that are essential to healthcare such as PACS and RIS, Wireless IP telephony and wireless medical diagnostics equipment.

The network technology will allow patient records to be automatically updated at the bedside and enable access to x-rays and scans to be stored electronically and viewed on screens. Scalable Networks said health professionals at Nuffield will be able to access this information and compare it with previous images at the touch of a button.

The implementation, based on technology from Extreme Networks, involves a 50GB core switching capacity in each of the 40 sites, Power over Ethernet enabled gigabit connectivity to more than 10,000 wired users and devices, plus the deployment of 400 wireless access points for corporate and guest use, all centrally authenticated and proactively managed.
