Microsoft acquires UMT to improve Office project management

Microsoft has acquired portfolio management and consulting firm UMT to help develop its forthcoming Office 12 collaboration suite.

Microsoft has acquired portfolio management and consulting firm UMT to help develop its forthcoming Office 12 collaboration suite.

The small, US-based UMT will focus on the Project and Visio elements of the Office 12 suite, which is expected in the second half of this year.

Key UMT executives and product development engineers are joining the Microsoft Office Project team, and UMT’s consulting arm is to become a separate Microsoft consulting group for clients.

The Project technology in Office allows firms to adopt project portfolio management and ease their compliance pains.

With the input of UMT, it is expected that Microsoft Project 12 will add improved project evaluation and better updating of information.

Visio 12 will be offering new graphic capabilities, enabling the redesign of processes and systems.

The cost of the UMT acquisition has not be revealed.
