Major wireless IT suppliers have joined forces to launch a worldwide Digital Communities initiative to help kick-start municipal wireless projects.
Intel, Cisco, IBM, SAP and Check Point are among major suppliers and telcos to help local authorities and governments adopt wireless-enabled communities.
The plan is to make internet access more widely available to communities across the world, thereby allowing private individuals and government employees to access affordable municipal services online.
Intel is promoting long-range WiMax broadband wireless solutions as a key enabler of the project, which includes the Westminster area of London.
Other cities involved include Philadelphia and Portland in the US, Taipei in Taiwan, Dusseldorf, Jerusalem, Monaco, Seoul, and Osaka.
