A Britannia Building Society IT project that moved 2.5 million accounts to a new system in one weekend was the overall winner of the Corporate IT Forum (Tif) Excellence in Business awards.

The three-year project, which also won an innovation award, culminated in a weekend handover of 65 million transactions to new back-office and front-office systems that fully integrated with the building society's customer relationship management system.

The new system became available to 3,000 staff in 190 branches, which will allow Britannia to better understand its customers and create flexible products.

Tif said the project - the Really Big Programme - demonstrated the impact of IT on the strategic direction of the organisation, allowed Britannia to deliver its corporate plan and ensured it was fit for the future with an anticipated financial impact of £130m through savings and increased revenue.

Britannia programme manager Mark Gater said, "Integration was vital to address customer services. The programme allowed us to develop innovative products which had proved difficult."

HBOS won the Profitability Award for its chip-and-Pin programme, which is set to make huge savings in fraud costs from 2004-2006. The bank estimated that lost and stolen mail and counterfeit fraud will be reduced by up to 55% from 2003 to 2006.

The awards, which are evaluated by and awarded to IT teams, are seen as the benchmark against which FTSE 100 companies measure IT performance, said David Roberts, Tif chief executive.

Jonathan Mitchell, a judge for the awards and Rolls-Royce director of business process improvement, said, "Best practices were very heavily managed in the [successful] projects. Implementation is the differentiator between failed and excellent projects."
