Users of R5 Lotus Domino databases will soon be able to read them via a Wireless Application Protocol (Wap) phone, removing the need to carry a laptop computer when out on the road.
Users will be able to gain remote access using a Wap phone, initially the Nokia 7110, to retrieve email, calendars and workflow applications that are driven by a Lotus Domino backbone.
Surrey & City Consulting (SCC), a Lotus business partner, is offering the service using the Nokia Wap toolkit. SCC technical development architect Steve Storey said the offering would make it easier for road warriors to leave their laptops at home and carry out most of their office communications via a mobile phone, instead of carrying both.
Wap for Domino V1.0 will be launched at the end of this month, with an advanced version written in Java being able to run more applications with greater efficiency. Prices for the service have yet to be announced.
