Internet service companies may regard m-commerce applications as a key component of their future business, but majority lack the relevant in-house expertise to handle WAP development work, warns mobile internet specialist, Zamano.
The company, which recently surveyed the opinions of 100 established web design and e-commerce consultancies in the UK, says there is a "significant" lack of awareness of mobile internet technologies among internet service providers. Only three per cent of the businesses it interviewed had experience of GPRS (General Packet Radio Service), notes Zamano, while just 16 per cent were involved in SMS (Short Messaging Service) development.
And while majority of respondents claimed to view WAP development work as an integral part of their overall service offering, only a quarter had dedicated WAP resources, and just 35 per cent actually conducted mobile internet work on site, reports Zamano.
"The survey highlighted some surprising trends, most notably that those companies eager to get involved in mobile internet are finding they don't have the skills pool needed," comments Darren O'Rodaigh, business development manager at Zamano. "A lot of web design / e-commerce companies are trying to double as mobile development businesses as well, but are unable to meet clients' needs because of a skills shortage in their area. Consequently, nearly 50 per cent of companies conducting WAP development work are finding that they have to outsource to mobile internet specialists (such as Zamano) just to stay in the game."
