Picture agency EMPICS is ramping up publicity of its technology that uses standard and patented mobile technology to send almost instant images from sporting events to consumers’ mobile phones and websites.

EMPICS’s system can deliver images to consumers carrying Wap picture-enabled phones and multimedia messaging service (MMS)enabled phones.

Users can pay their operator for selected pictures and EMPICS would receive a share of the proceeds, or users could take out a subscription direct with EMPICS.

EMPICS said the service is not fully commercial yet, but it has already used its system to deliver action images to Premier League and Football League websites. The technology has also been used at Sandown Races.

The delivery process that EMPICS is using relies on the industry picture production standard NMSP (new media stills production).

A wireless network is used to transmit images from the photographer’s digital camera to an online editor’s laptop at the event. The editor then sends chosen images to the EMPICS head office, where they are sent out to websites and phones.

EMPICS has patented its service as a result of combining some of its own code with NMSP.

Phil O’Brien, EMPICS chief executive said the system is aimed at all events, including concerts, and that it will also be sold as a franchised system to other providers by the end of the year.
