The city of Bath is establishing a city-wide wireless network as part of a research project looking how people will use mobile technology in the future.

The £1.6m Cityware project, based at the University of Bath, will allow people to find their way around the city, find out about interactive city-wide games and cultural activities, and access information services.

The project will give volunteers access to emerging applications and services likely to be appearing on mobile phones, laptops and handheld computers in years to come.

Dana‰ Stanton Fraser, from the university's psychology department, said the volunteers would use the mobile devices over the next three years and provide feedback on how the technologies affect their lives.
