Vodafone is to cut European mobile roaming charges by at least 40% by next April, as it attempts to stave off a legislative clampdown on charges by the European Commission.
The world’s biggest mobile operator said the price cut will benefit about 30 million Vodafone customers who roam every year.
Vodafone said the changes will see the average cost of roaming in Europe fall from over €0.90 (£0.64) a minute to less than €0.55 per minute.
Whether Vodafone’s price cut is good enough for the European Commission remains to be seen.
The Commission has already tabled roaming proposals that would make roaming calls the same price as those made in customers’ home countries.
Once the consultation is over later this year, legislation will be put to the European Parliament for a vote.
