3Com locks down the network

Antony Savvas

3Com has introduced a new range of network switches designed to deliver easier and more secure networking to small businesses.

The new Baseline Plus Switches are designed to deliver “smart” switching, such as Lan segmentation, traffic prioritisation and traffic port security monitoring to SMEs.

One of the switches, the Baseline Switch 2816-SFP Plus, adds high-speed Gigabit Ethernet performance to business networks that do not need sophisticated management capabilities. But the switch can increase control and enhance the intelligence of the network at a comparable price to buying other unmanaged switches on the market, said 3Com.

Kneko Burney, an analyst at Instat/MDR, said of the new switches, “The delivery of an unmanaged Gigabit switch with intelligence to configure a network for fewer than 500 users could cause a ripple effect in the industry, because business customers can now get more enterprise-class features in a switched network, but at a price relative to traditional unmanaged switches.”

Burney claims the 3Com launch comes at a good time, as small firms are planning to upgrade from slower 10/100 networks to Gigabit Ethernet.

The 3Com Baseline Switch 2816-SFP Plus is now shipping and is priced at $895 (£525).
