Utility storage provider 3PAR is deploying IBM System p5 servers with advanced power virtualisation in order to deliver a system that improves utilisation and rapid provisioning.

3PAR claims that its platform doubles server and storage utilisation and halves provisioning time and complexity. Through advanced fine-grained virtualisation of system resources, both technologies are attributed with eliminating what the company calls the restrictive physical boundary conditions that result in the over allocation of purchased system resources, excessive provisioning complexity and disruptive change management.
The integration of 3PAR InServ storage servers featuring thin provisioning and dynamic optimisation with the IBM System p5 virtualisation-enabling servers is designed to provide customers with a completely virtualised AIX datacentre in two floor tiles.
3PAR also announced the availability of Multipath I/O (MPIO) for IBM AIX, high-availability software for AIX servers attached to 3PAR InServ arrays.
The company believes that the virtual allocation and subsequent optimisation of systems also speeds customer applications to market and frees precious human expertise from routine administration. For example, dynamic optimisation provides for the non-disruptive optimisation of data service levels by enabling change of disk type, RAID level and other data layout parameters with a single command.
This capability is intended to eliminate the requirement for offline data migration. Similarly, IBM Virtual I/O offers the dynamic optimisation of I/O resources among multiple operating system partitions within a physical IBM System p5 server.
