Citrix is buying Netviewer, the Germany-based software-as-a-service (SaaS) company, to help its growth in virtual computing and in the European market.

Netviewer, which specialises in collaboration and IT services including web conferencing and remote management, will become part of Citrix Online by the first quarter of 2011.

"SaaS-based collaboration and IT services have been key to our growth story. We believe there is even more opportunity ahead as the global market matures and customers look for a strong, experienced partner," said Brett Caine, senior vice president at Citrix Online.

"With the acquisition of a company that shares our vision, we will continue to execute on our strategy for global expansion and accelerated growth by delivering products that offer a simpler, better experience to enable customers to succeed," he added.

Netviewer currently has 220 employees and 18,000 customers throughout Europe, said the firm.

Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
