The internet's system for connecting users with online
resources is key to combating cybercrime, says network naming
firmNominum.
The domain name service (DNS) is the perfect place to implement
security as it touches every internet transaction, said Gopala
Tumuluri, vice-president marketing at Nominum.
Legacy
DNS systems are unable to block malicious internet content
because they are designed to passively answer network queries.
But Nominum, whose chief scientist
Paul Mockapetris invented the DNS, has developed software that
addresses this weakness.
The firm's Intelligent DNS software has been designed to give
internet service providers and businesses the ability to tap into
real-time intelligence to block threats.
The system automatically combines standard DNS data with
multiple real-time sources of information on phishing, botnets and
malware to block connections to malicious sites.
Unlike traditional security software, Intelligent DNS can
actively block attempted connections to botnets' command centres
even after malware infection, said Tumuluri.
The system is also able to identify potential threats by
monitoring all DNS activity and allows businesses to connect to
third-party sources of threat information.
"DNS is a great source of threat information because every
single device, application and user on the internet uses DNS," said
Tumuluri.
Intelligent DNS, which replaces Nominum's caching name server
(CNS), also enables businesses and ISPs to customise policies based
on regulatory requirements.
