Being a CIO or a self-employed entrepreneur was the most popular ambition in a survey of 400 women working in the technology industry.

The women were questioned at the recent W-tech event and 14% said they wanted to be an entrepreneur, running their own business or a CIO.

Next most popular was project management, with 12% of the vote. Maggie Berry, director of womenintechnology.co.uk, which conducted the survey, said: "The results highlighted how ambitious women in IT are. It also goes to show just how many different career paths IT can offer."

The rest of the survey answers spanned a wide range. They included consultancy, coaching and mentoring, and professional blogging.

W-tech was a careers and networking event aimed at women. It was organised by the BCS Women's Forum and online job board womenintechnolgy.co.uk.
