Intel intends making a new push to crack the mobile chip market
for smartphones.
Intel is targeting the likes of the Apple iPhone, the BlackBerry
and the Nokia smartphone range with new chips expected to be
launched this year or early 2010.
Intel chief financial officer Stacy Smith
told Bloomberg, "What we have learned is that you can't build a
significant presence in the marketplace by winning a lot of the
small guys, the rabbits.
"If we are really on track, you should see announcements of real
design collaborations with one of the big guys, or hopefully more,
over the course of 2009 or early 2010."
Two years ago, Intel scrapped an attempt to grab a major piece
of the smartphone market. It failed to carve a niche for itself
despite splashing out $5bn in development costs.
But Intel is coming back as it wants to find an alternative
revenue stream to the PC market it already dominates. With chip
prices on the way down, the need now is even greater.
