Martin Sadler, director of HP Labs, predicts a 20,000
fold increase in processing power within the next 20 years using
nanotechnology to build a new generation of super-computing PCs and
mobile devices.
In a key note address recorded at the 10 Big Things Global Forum
in Edinburgh last month, Sadler says,
“The key driver for this surge in computing power will be the
use of nanotechnology to design chips at the molecular level which
means more power will be packed into a smaller space.”
“One can imagine, for example a child coming home from school
and saying they have created a film on their laptop. Only this time
it will be of professional cinema quality at the standard of a
Hollywood animation.”
Sadler forecasts that in future there will be even greater
personalisation of computers and mobile devices.
“We are already seeing that people want to customise their
computing experience to their individual tastes. We see computers
and mobile devices becoming fashion items with a very wide choice
of different styles and configurations to choose from.”
