A group campaigning against the national ID card scheme
is asking Londoners to sign a pledge against the proposed
card.
The group, No2ID, will hold
the event on Tuesday 29 January at 7pm at Conway Hall, Red Lion
Square, in central London.
No2ID said, "The government says the ID scheme 'will not be
compulsory', but at the same time it relies on coercion.
"The Home Office plans to make you 'volunteer'. Official
documents will one by one be 'designated', so that you cannot get
one without at the same time asking to be placed - for life - on
the
National
Identity Register."
People taking the No2ID pledge commit themselves to five
principles:
- Not to register for a national identity card
- Not to supply personal details or fingerprints to a National
Identity Register
- Not to apply for any document or service if joining the
National Identity Register is a condition of obtaining it
- Not to co-operate with any Identity and Passport Service
interview concerning their identity
- Promise by their example to encourage others to do the
same
