BTwill spend £260m to
convert the whole of Northern Ireland to its 21st Century Network
by 2010.
Along with parts of south Wales, Northern Ireland will be among
the first regions to benefit from the all IP network, which is
designed to offer new broadband and multimedia services to
businesses and consumers.
The move in Northern Ireland has been reported by the
BBC, which says Northern Ireland’s 160 local
telephone exchanges will converge into three major communications
hubs as a result.
Two of the exchanges will be in Belfast, and another one will be
located in Portadown, said the BBC.
BT has promised to triple broadband speeds in Northern Ireland
as a result of the conversion.
