Storage costs look likely to be slashed as Cisco, IBM
and seven other industry big-hitters have joined forces to create
an open source standard for storage management.
The goal of the group, called Aperi (Latin for 'to open'), is to
create common storage systems that can manage different suppliers'
systems.
Customers will be able to run their storage network more
efficiently and reduce costs, as it eliminates the need to upgrade
storage management software following hardware and application
changes.
Aperi will co-operate closely with the already established
Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA), dedicated to
establishing a new storage management software standard.
EMC, Hewlett-Packard and Symantec were noticeably absent from
the Aperi line-up, but the group hopes to encourage storage vendors
to join.
