Users warned of mobile virus threat

Tuesday 06 September 2005 12:01

IT security consultancy F.Secure has issued an alert regarding a virus that targets mobile devices. Called Commwarrior-B, it affected one of F.Secure's clients in Scandinavia.

The company said, "We have seen the first medium-scale internal infection of a company that was caused by a mobile virus."

Increasingly, sensitive corporate data is being held on mobile phones, wireless-enabled PDAs and mobile e-mail devices such as Blackberries. Always-on connections can mean this data is vulnerable to attack.

F.Secure said dozens of employees of the company received the virus via Bluetooth or MMS transmissions during the day-long outbreak. More than 20 of them opened the message on their phones, allowing it to infect their system.

The company urged businesses to write clear guidelines on Bluetooth and MMS operation for corporate users.
