The TJX group of companies - which includes TK Maxx - has settled class action damages lawsuits out of court, following the world's largest data breach.

The estimated cost to the company in settling is believed to run to the tens of millions of pounds mark. The firm previously set aside £64m in its accounts to deal with the data breach and legal action brought by customers and others affected by the breach.

The settlement covers class actions brought in the US, Canada and Puerto Rico. The settlement is subject to court approval and other conditions.

The settlement agreement will cover any costs incurred by customers through identity theft, the replacement of personal documents, and credit monitoring and identity theft insurance charges.

Free shopping vouchers will also be offered to those affected and the firm will offer them 15% discounts on store merchandise on special shopping days next year.

So far, TK Maxx customers in the UK and Ireland affected by the breach have not been offered any similar deal.
