IBM sues cut-price mainframe supplier

IBM is suing server supplier Platform Solutions for allegedly infringing mainframe software patents.

IBM is suing server supplier Platform Solutions for allegedly infringing mainframe software patents.

Platform Solutions develops Intel Itanium-based servers that can run a variety of operating systems, including IBM’s z/OS mainframe OS. The server company plans to sell solutions that support z/OS next year, but IBM said the firm was only entitled to use z/OS and other software as an end-user and not as a supplier.

IBM said it had been accused by Platform Solutions of violating US monopoly laws in refusing to extend a licence agreement to allow the server firm to sell on its software in its own systems.

So far, Platform Solutions has taken no legal action against IBM.
