Solana shines on SMBs

Solana Networks has launched FalconView, a route analytics appliance of a kind it believes has never before been available to small- to medium-sized businesses (SMBs).

The company believes that SMBs are critically dependent on their networks, which are becoming more complex and challenging to manage. Adding to that complexity is the trend towards converged services such as voice over IP (VoIP), IPTV, web services and service oriented architectures (SOAs).

Network problems are not only costly to businesses but also prevent the implementation of these new converged services. Many estimates, says Solana, put the cost of downtime to be anywhere between 2% and 16% of revenues. This means that SMBs are losing huge sums of money each year through poor network availability and the failure to meet service level agreements.

In Solana's opinion, the tools required to diagnose network problems and combat downtime have not kept pace with the growth in dependency and complexity of networks. It believes that SMBs cannot afford the full suite of network management offerings from larger suppliers and therefore are at a further disadvantage in keeping networks running, controlling costs or offering new services. FalconView has been designed specifically to address these issues.

FalconView utilises proprietary technology that discovers, monitors and diagnoses routed IP networks, thereby, claims Solana, allowing for reduced downtime and operating costs. The company says that FalconView can also help cut capital expenditure by reducing over-provisioning and increasing network availability to allow for new services such as VoIP.

The system is supplier agnostic, auto-discovers the network, provides full Layer 3 visibility, and the ability to monitor and troubleshoot the network, all from a graphical user interface. Moreover, it does not use SNMP polling and so does not add any load to the network.
