IT's role in organisations to be pivotal

IT’s role in the organisation will become even more pivotal by 2011, though paradoxically it could mean the death of the IT department as we know it, predicts Gartner.

Outsourcing, maturing technology and more ingrained business use of IT are driving radical changes in the industry, contends the analyst.

IT could become so embedded into the business that it is run by business executives, and IT would be sourced as part of a broader business process. Increasingly, the success or failure of a company will depend on their mastery of IT.

A new breed of IT organisation, focusing on information and process, will rise from the IT department’s ashes, delegates at the US Gartner IT Symposium were told last week.

“While it will grow from an IT base, the primary focus of the new organisation will be business transformation and strategic assets of information and process,” suggests John Mahoney, chief of research for IT services and management at Gartner. “When mature it may no longer be identified as an IT organisation.”

By 2011 three-quarters of IT firms will be doing something entirely different and not defined as technology companies. A further 10% will have folded and 10% will become commodity players.

"Whatever the outcome, IT executives must identify and monitor the key external trends that will affect business technology in their enterprises," Mahoney adds.

• Gartner’s European IT symposium will take place between 7-1 November in Cannes. The event will have a focus on rapid results and establishing faster ROI fro essential IT. It will show how big IT transformations will unfold; the new reality of the shrinking IT organisation, harnessing professes; enterprise architectures; communications infrastructures for anytime/anywhere convergence; enterprise software strategies; IT and business integration and alignment.
