The Ministry of Defence has awarded BT a £5.9m contract with the Ministry of Defence to design, build and operate an extension to the its communications testing system.

BT will complete the work at the Land Systems Reference Centre (LSRC), the MoD's test and reference facility at Blandford Camp, in Dorset.

This facility tests defence communication information systems to make sure they will work in battle.

BT and military personnel already run the facility as a joint team, performing risk reduction and assurance testing in a secure laboratory environment that simulates live conditions.

They are able to diagnose problems in the field and support exercises and operations in real-time.

The new extension will enable the LSRC to test the increasing amount of new technology used, such as the Bowman tactical communications system, the Skynet 5 satellite communications system, and the Cormorant digital communications network.
