Chip manufacturer Intel has joined the Liberty Alliance Project, the group which develops open standards for the management of user identities on networks.

Intel will be joining VeriSign, Sun Microsystems and Hewlett-Packard on the alliance's management board. Last November, the Liberty Alliance published its Phase 2 specifications, completing the organisation's Identity Web Services Framework.

The framework gives companies a roadmap for designing and deploying web services that share user authentication information, which simplifies the management of user identities and passwords.

The new standards make it possible to link user accounts at two or more organisations, allowing information to be exchanged in a web services transaction, or in the sharing of billing data or shipping information.
