A leading UK IT consultancy is combating a technical skills shortage by offering successful applicants a job on the day of their interview. PricewaterhouseCoopers is using the fast-track approach to recruit IT experts in day-long selection sessions.

Most in demand are systems integration and technical architecture consultants. Experience in Web development technology, such as Broadvision and ATG Dynamo, is particularly valuable.

Steve Watson, partner in European financial services for the consultancy, said 70% of its contracts were now based on e-business. A typical e-business project involves between 10 and 15 software suppliers and requires consultants to integrate Web front-ends with legacy systems, he said.

The re-emergence of demand for systems integration skills comes as demand for IT professionals is at rock bottom. According to a Computer Weekly/SSP salary trends survey last month, the number of IT jobs advertised in the second quarter of this year fell dramatically to just over 25,000. This was down by almost half from the same time last year.
