Lucent says that the Orinoco family has been designed for secure, high-speed Internet access in public places like universities, office complexes and airports.

The technology is based upon the IEEE 802.11b wireless standard and, according to Lucent, is capable of transmitting and receiving data at 11mbps.

"This is not a slow trickle of data, but full wideband Ethernet-level data networking delivered without wires.

Stevens says the Orinoco products will free users from struggling to connect cables.
