Dr Derek Meyer, lecturer in biomedical informatics, St George’s, University of London tells Smarthealthcare:
“… Once the pain of the wasted billions is forgotten and the bits that are currently causing annoyance or distress are switched off, the NPfIT legacy will provide the NHS with the strategic platform on which NHS 2.0 will be built.”
That said, he argued in a March 2010 report “Privately-controlled health records and electronic Summary Care Records”, which was commissioned by the Department of Health, that the NPfIT was on the brink of collapse.
The aims of NPfIT were to make the NHS more efficient and more effective and these have clearly not been met, says Dr Meyer.
